An alternative Manchester wedding

Claire and Keegan’s alternative wedding was inspired by their love of comic books, video games and films. Incorporating their personality into every aspect of the big day, this wedding was entirely unique.

To start the day, bridal preparation was at The Palace Hotel in Manchester city centre. Breaking from tradition, Claire opted for an alternative style short wedding dress paired with limited edition Vans X Nintendo Sk8-Hi trainers in white. This was the ultimate outfit to look quirky yet be comfortable. Adding yet more creativity into the mix, Claire completed her look with a funky planet handbag.

Quirky details and comic book confetti

Newly weds often express their individuality via hand made wedding details and accessories. Hand making favours, centre pieces and name cards can takes months so it’s best to start the DIY process early.

Claire and Keegan kept things different with little touches throughout the day, from comic book confetti right through to the groom’s dinosaur socks. Cutting out the confetti from old comic books took the groom several weeks!

Unique photos at The Manchester Museum

The wedding ceremony was held at the Manchester Museum which is a fantastic venue for alternative weddings. Offering a truly unique experience for couples and their guests, the photo opportunities are amazing. One of the best features that the Museum has to offer is the enormous T-Rex skeleton. Hanging from the ceiling, the giant T-Rex guarantees that your wedding photos will stand out from the crowd!

Also, as huge fans of Jurassic Park, the bride and groom commissioned an artist to create a truly extraordinary wedding cake based upon their specifications. Tiny glitter dinosaurs holding lightsabers were the theme for this creative cake smash. I have never had so much fun photographing a cake!

With the entire bridal party rocking their Vans trainers, we all went outside for some funky group shots. The Manchester Museum is housed in a stunning 19th Century building. Stunning architecture and draped ivy surrounding the Quadrangle makes beautiful pictures.

Bride and groom portraits

Claire and Keegan set time aside for their couple portraits as these photos were a priority for them. The Museum has some really breathtaking areas to take wedding photographs in. One of my favourites is of the bride and groom with hundreds of origami birds behind them.

Next we explored the more gothic corridors of the Museum. Floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows make the perfect backdrop for impressive wedding photos. After this, we took to the streets of Manchester and used a graffiti wall for some more alternative shots. City centre wedding venues offer so much flexibility when it comes to location choices; from brightly coloured walls to dark and urban streets.

A relaxed reception at The Blackdog Ballroom

Blackdog Ballroom on New Wakefield Street (NWS) was the reception venue for Claire and Keegan’s relaxed after party. Instead of having a formal affair, they gathered their friends and family for a casual buffet and night of dancing to rock music. Keegan, the groom, is from Australia so the party revolved around the laid back Australian nature. After capturing lots of fun party pictures using slow shutter speeds (to create motion blur) I left them to dance the night away.

Here are some of my favourites photos from this alternative wedding at the Manchester Museum.
